Fortnite: Parental Controls

Parents: Is your kiddo diving deep into Fortnite?

We get it.

Here’s the link to help you with setting up the parental controls

Step by step guide

1. Install Fortnite

Before you can start playing, you need to create an account and download the game to your device.

  1. On console, purchase the game from the respective digital store.

    1. Let the game download completely before starting.

    2. On PC, first install the Epic Games Launcher.

    3. Log in to your Epic Games account.

    4. Download Fortnite.

2. Set-Up Parental Control Account

To set-up Parental Controls through Fortnite:

  1. Launch Fortnite on your platform of choice.

  2. Once in the Lobby, click on your Display Name icon which is found on the top right of the screen

  3. Select the Settings gear icon.

  4. Select Parental Controls | Set Up Parental Controls

  5. Specify and confirm an email address that you check regularly.

  6. Set up your 6-digit Parental Control PIN to ensure no changes can be made without consent.

  7. Select your parental control preferences.

3. Specify Parental Control Settings

You can specify these settings via your child’s Epic Games account using the Epic Account Portal or directly on the gaming platform you are using.

Work through the following settings to suit your child’s requirements:

  1. Social Permission – How can your child interact with other players.

  2. Epic Voice Chat Permission – Whether you can speak to other players.

  3. Epic Text Chat Permission – Whether you can text-chat to other players.

  4. Filter Mature Language – Select this to filter out mature language such as profanity in Fortnite’s text chat.

  5. Require a PIN to Add Friends – Ensure that only friends you allow can add your child.

  6. Purchasing Settings – Require your PIN to make purchases in the game.

  7. Age-Rating Restrictions – Specify which other game experiences children can access on the Fortnite platform.

  8. Allow Creative Mode – Enable children to use the game creator modes.

  9. Playtime & Activity Reports – Sign up with your email to recieve play reports for Fortnite

4. Set-Up Console or Platform Level Settings

Along with the Parental Settings on Fortnite, you also have the additional control offered by the platform you are playing on.

This means that if you, for example, turn off voice chat in Fortnite, your child may still be able to access voice chat using the chat system built into your console. Also, it means that if you apply restrictions at the console or platform level, for example specifying they are a certain age via the account or limiting user-generated content, they may not be able to play Fortnite.

  • PlayStation: The age of your PlayStation account must be 12 or older. You also need to enable Communication and User-Generated Content in the Network Features section of Parental Controls for the PlayStation account wanting to play the game.

  • Xbox: The age of your Xbox account must be 12 or older. To access Fortnite you need to enable the Family Settings | Privacy | You can see and upload community creations for Everybody. You also need to enable Family Settings | Cross-network play to play with people on different systems.

  • Nintendo Switch: The age of your Nintendo Online account must be 12 or older. To be able to use voice chat you need Restriction Level | Communication With Others set to Not Restricted.
